• What is Reiki?

"“Reiki” (ray-key) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy, and is also a word used to describe a system of natural healing, This tradition was founded by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication. We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all living things. When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us, and we experience a sense of well being." from Reiki association website

Reiki: A Personal Journey to a Subtle Healing Art

by Candi Montgomery

Touch and laying-on of hands to relieve pain and bring comfort is a natural instinct and is the foundation of many types of healing including Reiki. As a child, I was introduced to the concept of healing by my mother who used ‘healing hands’ to relieve and comfort all manner of childhood ailments, bumps and bruises. The particular warmth of her hands at these times was very noticeable and her spiritual approach to life made a lasting impression.

The word ‘Reiki’ means ‘Universal Life Energy’. It is a system believed to restore and harmonise the flow of our natural and vital life force energy, focussing and transferring this energy for the benefit of the receiver. This energy is known as ‘Ki’ in Japan, ‘chi’ in China, or as prana (the breath of life) in India.

Since being attuned to Reiki, I notice the effects of this beautiful energy more and more, flowing through more than my body. It permeates my mind, emotions and subtle levels of being. I feel its flow as it moves, clears, illuminates, guides, inspires and heals.

I became a practitioner member of the UK Reiki Federation, one of the most well-respected organisations in the UK of this healing art, in order to benefit from the support and experience of other professional practitioners.

The UK Reiki Federation also provides information to the public about the use and benefits of reiki and maintain details of registered practitioners for anyone looking for a reiki professional. Their website tells us that Reiki can help us cope by encouraging relaxation and bringing balance to both mind and emotions. They say that benefits reported by clients of their Practitioner members include deep relaxation, promoting a calm, peaceful sense of wellbeing on all levels. That reiki’s gentle energy is easily adapted to most medical conditions and may be used safely by people of all ages, including pregnant mothers, the new-born, surgical patients, the frail and the elderly, in any situation. Being complementary, Reiki works effectively alongside orthodox healthcare and natural remedies, expanding treatment options. This Japanese complementary therapy is now being used in many settings including, therapy centres, GP surgeries, hospitals, hospices, cancer support groups, and in the care of the elderly.

If you would like to find out more or try this complementary therapy, contact one of our practitioners:
